Calendar

The calendar that opens over your home screen, and everything that opens from it: an event's details, the forms that add and edit, your tasks, and Move. The pictures marked Try it answer your taps the way the calendar does.

Opening the calendar FREE

You get a full calendar one tap from any widget: a Day, a Week and a Month that open over your home screen, with no app to launch, drawn in the look of the widget you tapped. Where you tap decides the day and the view it opens on.

You tapThe calendar opens onIn the view
The calendar icon in a widget's action row Today The one you used last
A day header, an empty day, Nothing coming up, or the NextUp widget's header That day Day
A day in a Month widget's grid: the second tap, or the first where there is no list That day, selected Month
A column of a Week widget: the second tap That day, picked Week
Show in calendar, on an event's sheet The event's day, with the event highlighted Day

The calendar icon keeps one memory for all your widgets: the view you last chose inside the calendar. It always lands on today. A widget tap that asks for a view never changes that memory, which is how you keep three views one tap away.

If days open in another app. With Open events in set to another calendar app, a day tapped on a widget opens there instead. The calendar icon always opens NextUp's calendar. See Opening another calendar app.

One row at the top steers the calendar, and stays in place as you change view.

Day Week and Month, away from today
  1. ✕ closes the calendar. Back and a tap outside do the same.
  2. The period. On the Day it is the month's name. The Week and the Month name their dates on their own cards instead.
  3. Today brings today back. It shows on the Week and the Month, and only while today is off screen.
  4. Two buttons for your tasks PRO, side by side. The list opens the task list. The eye is the Tasks toggle: it adds your Google Tasks to every view, and takes them out again. See What the calendar shows.
  5. The switch: three icons for Day (one date), Week (a row of days) and Month (a grid). Switching keeps the date you were on.

Day, Week and Month

Three views of the same calendar, each with the chosen day's list in it. There is one day in hand at a time: the day the Day shows is the day picked in the Week and selected in the Month.

Tap the Week or Month icon in the switch, top right. In the Month, tap a day, then tap it again.

Day

The whole day at a glance, as a list. A strip of day pills sits over it: today is filled, the day shown is ringed.

  1. The strip. Tap a pill, or swipe sideways, for another day.
  2. All-day events come first, with "24h" where the time goes. They stay pinned at the top while the rest scrolls.
  3. Timed events follow by start, the end under the start. What is over is dimmed.
  4. The now marker, on today, sits after what has already started.
  5. Join PRO opens the meeting straight away, until it ends.
  6. Overlaps ends the row of an event that clashes with another, and the times that clash turn red.
  7. Tasks come last when the Tasks toggle is on, with Task where the time goes. Done ones are struck through.
  • More than two all-day events fold into one row, such as +3 all day. Tap it to unfold them; Show less folds them back.
  • An empty day says Nothing on, with Tap + to add an event under it.

Week

One page per week. Each day is a column with one coloured bar per event or task, then "+n" when there are more. Days gone by are dimmed. Today's date is filled; the day you picked is ringed and its column tinted. Under the columns is that day's list, as the Day shows it.

  • Tap a column to pick its day. Only the list changes.
  • Swipe, or tap an arrow beside the week's dates, for another week. The same weekday stays picked.
  • Tap the day's name over the list to open that day in the Day view. Back returns to the Week.

Month

One page per month. Each day shows its event titles as coloured chips while they fit, then "+2" for the rest. Today is filled, the selected day is ringed, and that day's list sits under the grid.

  • Tap a day to select it and list it under the grid.
  • Tap it again, or tap the day's name over the list, to open it in the Day view. Back returns to the Month.
  • Swipe, or tap an arrow beside the month's name, for another month.

The floating buttons

Three buttons float at the bottom right of every view: +, a search button above it, and a filter button, a funnel, above that when there is something hidden to show.

Tap + in the corner. Then close the menu and try the funnel.

The + menu

Each of the three buttons adds on the day in hand: the day the Day shows, the day picked in the Week, the day selected in the Month.

ButtonWhat it opens
Event FREE The event form on that day, at its next free half hour.
Birthday FREE The same form, set up as a birthday: all day, repeating every year.
Task PRO The task form, due on that day. It needs a Google Tasks account connected on the dashboard. A new task shows in the calendar only while the Tasks toggle is on.

The search button turns the calendar into a search. The header becomes a field, Search events, with three pills under it that choose where it looks.

  • Title, Location and Notes say where the search looks. Title and Location start on; at least one stays on.
  • It finds events, not tasks, from a year back to two years ahead.
  • Every word you type must be there. Accents and capitals are ignored, so "cafe" finds "Café".
  • Results come under Coming up, the nearest first, then Past, the most recent first.
  • An event hidden by a keyword is found all the same, dimmed.

Tap a result to open its sheet. There, Show in calendar closes the search and takes the calendar to the event's day, with the event highlighted. ✕ or Back leaves the search and returns to the calendar as it was.

The filter button PRO

The calendar follows the widget's Hide events containing keywords (in Widget settings), so those events are left out. The filter button, a funnel, appears only when the days on screen hold such an event. Tap it and they show, dimmed, each with a small funnel before its title where there is room; the button's funnel is crossed meanwhile, and a tap on it hides them again. It lasts until you close the calendar, and changes no setting. The eye in the header is another thing: it shows and hides your tasks.

An event's sheet FREE

Tap an event anywhere, on a widget, in the calendar, in a search or on a reminder, and you get everything about it and everything you can do with it, without leaving your home screen.

  1. The calendar it belongs to, by colour and name.
  2. The title and when. A repeating event says its repeat in words.
  3. Join PRO, on an event with a meeting link, until it ends.
  4. The place. A tap opens it in your maps app.
  5. The description, with its links. Show more and Show less unfold and fold a long one.
  6. The guests, each with their answer.
  7. The reminders set on the event.
  8. The actions: Edit, Move, Delete.
  9. The way on: Show in calendar, or your calendar app.

The actions

  • Edit opens the event form, filled in.
  • Move PRO opens Move on this event. You can try it without Pro.
  • Delete shows only on events you organise.
  • Show in calendar opens the calendar's Day view on the event's day, with the event highlighted. If Open events in names another app, the button is Open in followed by that app's name instead. A sheet opened from inside the calendar has neither: the calendar is one Back away.

Deleting

Delete asks again in the same place, not in a dialog: the buttons turn into Cancel and a red Confirm. Leave them alone for a few seconds and they turn back.

Tap Delete. Nothing is deleted yet.

An event that happens once: Confirm deletes it.

A repeating event: This deletes this one date, All the whole series.

Invitations

An event someone else invited you to is answered, not edited: it has no Edit, and Going? with Yes, No and Maybe in its place.

  • Tap an answer and it is saved to the calendar. The sheet stays open.
  • On a repeating event the answer is for the whole series, and the sheet says so.

Adding and editing FREE

A new event takes two taps after its title, and every field of the form is free. The same form adds and edits: quick add and the calendar's + open it empty, an event's Edit opens it filled in.

Quick add

The icon in a widget's action row opens Quick add: two tiles, each opening its form at once.

  • Event opens the event form.
  • Task PRO opens the task form. It needs a Google Tasks account connected on the dashboard.
  • The sheet rises from the bottom, or drops from the top when the widget's Icons at the top is on.

An event in two taps

The form opens with the keyboard up on the title, and the day and time already filled in. Type the title, tap the button.

Type a title. The button spells out what it will add, and when.

Tap it. It says Added, the sheet closes, and the event is on your widgets.

  • When it starts. From quick add, at the next full hour. From the calendar's +, or from a Week or Month widget with a day picked, on that day at its next free half hour.
  • How long it lasts. The widget's Default event duration PRO, which is 30 minutes unless you changed it.
  • Editing works the same way, and the button reads Save.
  • Leaving with something typed asks first: Discard or Keep editing.

More details, field by field

More details unfolds the rest of the form, and Fewer details folds it. The form remembers how you left it.

FieldWhat it does
All dayA switch. On, the event takes whole days and has no times.
Starts, EndsThe day and the time of each. Move the start and the length is kept.
CalendarThe calendar the event is saved to. It starts on the one you used last.
RepeatDoes not repeat to begin with. Presets for every day, every weekday, every week, every month and every year, and Custom… for your own interval, weekdays and end.
RemindersAdd or remove the event's own reminders, as far as its calendar allows.
Location, NotesPlain text. The location opens in maps from the event's sheet.
Video call linkPaste a Meet, Zoom or Teams link and the widget shows Join on the event. NextUp does not create meeting rooms.
GuestsOn Google calendars only. Add each guest by email; Google sends the invitations.
Show asBusy or Free: whether the event blocks your time for others.
ColourA colour for this event alone, where the account offers them.

For anything the form does not do, the link at its foot, More options in followed by your calendar app's name, hands what you typed to that app's own new-event screen.

Birthdays

Birthday, in the calendar's + menu, opens the same form as New birthday: the title field asks for a Name, and the event is all day and repeats every year. Type "Maya" and it is saved as "Maya's birthday". It is an ordinary yearly event, so More details can change anything, a reminder included.

Saving a repeating event

Saving a change to an event that repeats asks once, Save a repeating event: This changes only the date you opened, All changes the whole series.

Tasks PRO

With Pro and a Google Tasks account connected on the dashboard, you add, edit, tick and move tasks from the home screen, and the widgets show the change at once. Tasks have a day, with no time and no repeat.

The task form

Quick add's Task tile, the calendar's + menu and the task list's + open it, under the heading New task.

  • The title: What needs doing?
  • The due day: Today to begin with, or Tomorrow, or a date you pick. From the calendar's +, or a Week or Month widget with a day picked, it starts on that day.
  • The account, when you connected more than one. It starts on the one you used last.
  • Under More details: Notes, and the List the task goes in.

A task's sheet

Tap a task's title on a widget or in the calendar. Its sheet is where you change it, with no separate form:

  • The title and the notes edit in place: tap and type.
  • The due day changes with the same chips, or a date.
  • The box beside the title ticks the task, and unticks it.
  • Subtasks are listed, each with its own box.
  • Move opens Move on the task.
  • Delete asks again in place, with Cancel and Confirm, as an event's does.
  • Google Tasks opens the task in that app.
  • Tasks opens the task list.

The task list

Every open task in one place, by due day. It opens from a widget's +N more tasks, from the NextUp widget's task count, from the list button in the calendar's header, and from Open tasks on the task digest notification.

  1. A box ticks its task. The task stays in the list, struck through, so you can take it back.
  2. A row opens the task's sheet.
  3. The clock swaps in the tasks completed in the last 30 days, so you can untick one. Tap it again for the tasks to do.
  4. + opens the task form.

The sections are Overdue, Today, Tomorrow and Later. Pull the list down to refresh it. Tasks with no due day have a section of their own after Today, No date, when there are any: this list is the one place that shows them, not the widgets and not the calendar.

Move PRO

Move reschedules an event or a task without opening a calendar app. You see the day it is going to, what is already there, and one button that says exactly what will happen.

Ways in

  • A widget's Move mode: tap the icon in the action row, then the Move pill on a row.
  • Move on an event's or a task's sheet.
  • Move on a row of the Move history.

Try it without Pro. From an event's sheet, and inside the calendar, Move opens for everyone. The strip, both views, dragging and resizing all work; only the confirm button is locked, and a tap on it shows what Pro adds.

The Day: a timeline

  1. The header says Move event or Move task and what is being moved. Its switch has Day and Week; Move has no Month.
  2. The strip starts at today. Tap the day to move to. The day the event comes from is ringed.
  3. The card is the event. Drag it and it snaps to quarter hours; drag its bottom edge to change its length, 15 minutes at least. Tap a free stretch and it snaps in there. Dropped on something, it reads overlaps.
  4. The pills: +1 Week, All day, several at once, and a date picker.
  5. The confirm spells out the result. Nothing changes until you tap it.

The Week

Switch to Week and seven days sit side by side, drawn to scale. Drag the card across days and hours, or tap a free stretch to drop it there. A panel above the pills says the new times and what they clash with.

The pills and the confirm

You are movingThe pillsWhat moves
An event +1 Week, All day, several at once, a date picker The day, the start and the length. +1 Week is a step: tap it again for two weeks. All day turns a timed event into an all-day one, and back.
A task +1 Day, +2 Days, +1 Week, a date picker The due day only: a task has no time.

The button under the pills names the result, such as Move to Mon 24, 10:00, and stays off until something has changed. Undo is in the Move history.

Several at once

For timed events, the third pill lets you rearrange a day in one go. With it on, a tap on another event picks that one up, and the one you left stays where you put it, marked but not yet saved. The button counts them: Review changes (2). The review lists each move, old place struck and new place under it, with a ✕ to drop one, and Save changes (2) writes them all. Each becomes its own entry in the Move history, with its own Undo.

Repeating events, and what counts as a clash

  • A repeating event moves one date only. The screen says Moves this occurrence only, and the rest of the series stays where it is.
  • Hidden events still count. An event one of the widget's hide-keywords hides is drawn dimmed in Move and clashes like any other.
  • Tasks never clash. With the Tasks toggle on they are shown for reference.
  • Some events can't be moved: those on a read-only calendar, and meetings only the organiser may change. Move says why and changes nothing.

Move history and Undo PRO

Every move can be taken back for a day. The history icon appears in the widget's action row while the last 24 hours hold a move, and opens the list.

Each row is one move: what moved, from where, to where.

  1. Undo puts it back where it was. It works only while the event or task is still where the move put it: if you moved or edited it since, it is left as it is.
  2. Move opens Move again, from where it is now.

What the calendar shows

The calendar is where you look at the whole day, so it shows more than the widget that opened it.

Calendars shown FREE

The calendar lists the calendars of the widget you tapped or, if you prefer, those of all your widgets together. Choose on the dashboard, with Calendars shown in its Calendars row.

Which of the widget's filters apply

The widget's settingIn the calendar
Hide events containing PROApplied. Those events are left out, until you tap the filter button.
Show only events containingNot applied. Every event is shown.
Time slotsNot applied. The whole day is shown.
Hide all-day eventsNot applied. All-day events are shown.

The filters themselves are in Widget settings.

The Tasks toggle PRO

The eye in the header adds the Google Tasks of the widget you tapped to all three views, each task on its due day: rows marked Task after the events in the Day and the lists, bars in the Week's columns, chips in the Month.

  • It is remembered, for every widget, until you turn it off. Move has the same toggle, and the two are one setting.
  • Overdue tasks that are still open are shown on today.
  • Done tasks are struck through.
  • How far ahead does not follow the widget: the calendar has the tasks of every day you browse to, whether the widget shows 7 days or 30.
  • The list button beside it opens the task list, whether the eye is on or off.
  • Without Pro one button stands in for the two, with a PRO mark, and a tap shows what Pro adds. With Pro and no account connected both are dimmed.

Closing, Back and the look

Everything here opens over your home screen and closes back to it, one step at a time.

  • To close the calendar or a sheet: ✕, Back, or a tap outside it.
  • Back goes one step down. From a sheet or a form opened inside the calendar, Back returns to the calendar as it was; Back again returns to your home screen.
  • Inside the calendar, Back also closes the + menu and the search first, and returns from a day opened out of the Week or the Month.
  • Saving an edit made from inside the calendar lands on the calendar, not back on the event's sheet.

The look is the widget's. The calendar and every sheet are drawn in the look of the widget that opened them, its colours and its corners: see Your style goes with the widget.
