Widget settings

What each widget shows and how it lays it out: every switch, its default, and which widget has it. The pictures marked Try it answer your taps the way the app does.

The settings screen

Each widget has a screen of its own, with a live preview that follows every change you make. There are three ways in:

  • On the dashboard, tap the widget's page.
  • On the dashboard, tap Configure under the widget.
  • On the widget itself, tap the cog. The app opens on that widget, one tap from its settings.

Nothing needs saving: an edit shows in the preview at once and reaches the widget on your home screen a moment later.

An Agenda's settings, without Pro

  1. Which widget this is: its name and its kind.
  2. Two tabs. Settings is this page: what the widget shows. Style is how it looks.
  3. The preview is your widget with your own events. It stays in place above both tabs while you scroll.
  4. Two cards. Content is what goes into the widget; Layout is how it is laid out.
  5. A group arrives closed: an icon, a title, and one line saying what it is set to. Tap it to unfold its rows in place; tap again to fold it.

Tap a group to unfold it. Several can be open at once, and the screen scrolls like a phone.

Hidden rows and greyed rows

The four kinds of widget share this screen, and it changes with the kind.

  • A row a widget has no use for is left out. A Week has no Days ahead, because the week is its range, so the row is not there. The table at the end says which widget has which row.
  • A greyed row is switched off by another setting, and comes back when you change that setting. 24-hour clock is greyed while Start time and End time are both off, because no time is printed.

One copy, or one per widget

Whose settings you are editing
FREEOne copy, shared by all your widgets. Change it from any Agenda and every Agenda follows. The Agenda is the free widget; NextUp, Week and Month are Pro widgets.
PROEach widget keeps its own copy, so a work Agenda and a family Month can show different calendars, filters and details.

Text sizes, Compact view, colours and corners are not here: they are on the Style tab.

Content, on every widget

The Content card decides what gets into the widget at all: which calendars and which of their events are filtered out, then whose tasks and which of those. Its groups come in two pairs, in this order, on all four widgets: Calendars and Calendar filters, then Google Tasks and Google Tasks filters.

Calendars

A switch for every calendar on your phone, each with its colour. All are on to begin with, and the summary reads Showing: All calendars. Turn one off and its events leave the widget; nothing changes in your calendar app. Which calendars exist is your phone's business: see Calendars on the dashboard.

A work widget and a home widget PRO

  1. Place two widgets, for example an Agenda and a NextUp.
  2. Open the first one's settings, unfold Calendars and leave only Work on.
  3. Open the second one's settings and leave only Personal and Family on.

Calendar filters

Filters take events out of the widget. They never touch your calendar, and they never hide a task. The summary counts the ones that are on.

RowDefaultWhat it does
Hide all-day eventsOffLeaves out events that last the whole day.
Hide declined eventsOnLeaves out invitations you answered No to.
Hide past eventsOffDrops each of today's events once it has ended. Off, they stay in the list, dimmed. On the Agenda, Week and Month; NextUp has no such row.
Hide events containing PROEmptyHides every event that contains one of your words. Separate the words with commas.
Show only events containing PROEmptyKeeps only the events that contain at least one of your words.
Time slots PROAny timeKeeps only the events that fall in the hours you set.
  • Where the words are looked for. Under each word list, three chips: Title (the default), Notes or Both. Capitals do not matter, and a word matches inside a longer one: "call" also catches "Recall".
  • The two lists work together. An event must contain a word from the show list, if there is one, and none from the hide list. The same word in both would hide everything, so NextUp refuses it and tells you which word.

Time slots PRO

Tap Time slots to open this sheet. Add time slot adds one, up to four; tap its Start or End to set the time.

  • An event shows if it overlaps a slot, even partly.
  • All-day events are not affected: they have their own switch.
  • Only on weekdays applies the slots from Monday to Friday and shows everything at the weekend.

Google Tasks PRO

Puts your Google Tasks beside your events, on the day each is due. Without Pro the group carries a PRO badge and opens the Pro screen. With Pro and no account yet, its summary reads Connect an account on the dashboard: accounts are connected on the dashboard, not here.

There is no switch for tasks as a whole. The accounts are the switch, as the calendars are for your events: a widget shows tasks while at least one account is on. Turn every account off and the summary reads Off, with no task on the widget; turn one back on and they return.

RowDefaultWhat it does
One switch per connected account, under Tasks to showOnWhose tasks this widget shows. An account you connect later is on too, unless this widget already had an account switched off.
One switch per task list, under its accountOnWhich of the account's lists this widget shows. The lists are there while the account is on and has two or more. Switch off the last list an account shows and the account goes off instead.
How Google Tasks updatesAn ⓘ row. It explains why a task changed in another app can take until the next refresh to show.

The summary says what is left out, as the Calendars group's does: Showing: 1 of 2 accounts, or Showing: 3 of 4 lists once a list is off. With everything shown it is the account's address, or Showing: All accounts when you connected several.

Google Tasks filters PRO

What Calendar filters is to your events, for your tasks: which are marked and which are left out. The group is there with Pro and an account connected. Its summary counts the switches that are on, 1 active to begin with, and its rows are greyed while the widget shows no account.

RowDefaultWhat it does
Mark overdueOnPuts a warning triangle beside a task that is past its day. Greyed while Hide overdue is on.
Hide overdueOffLeaves overdue tasks out. Greyed while Mark overdue is on: turn that off first.
Hide completedOffLeaves out the tasks you have ticked. Off, a ticked task stays in the list, struck through.

Event details

Decides what each event's row carries under its title. Every detail you switch on is one more line, drawn only for the events that have it, so a short row means more events fit in the widget. The group is on all four widgets; NextUp has fewer of its rows.

Widget actions

Every widget carries one row of icons. This group picks which icons are in it and whether it sits under the content or above it. What a tap on each icon does is on the Widgets page, under The action row.

The group's summary counts the icons and says where the row is, for example 5 icons · At the bottom. With every icon off it reads No icons. A narrow widget can leave some icons out by itself: see When the widget is narrow.

Refresh

A widget is a picture that is redrawn now and then. A change in your calendar always redraws it at once, whatever you choose here. This group is about the redraws in between, which are what move an event from "next" to "now" and take it away when it is over.

Each mark is a redraw. Amber: Smart's, on the minute an event starts or ends. Grey: the routine one, about every 30 minutes. Client call runs from 10:10 to 10:40, Sprint planning from 11:20 to 12:00.
RowChoicesWhat it does
Timing PRO Smart or Interval Smart, the default with Pro, adds a redraw when the next event starts or ends, so the widget turns over on time. With no event coming up soon it redraws about every 30 minutes. Interval redraws on the clock only.
Update every 10, 15, 30 or 60 min How often an Interval widget redraws: 30 to begin with, 60 for fewer updates. 10 and 15 are part of Pro. Greyed while Timing is Smart.
How updates work An ⓘ row with the same explanation, in the app.
  • Android delivers Smart's redraws and the short intervals at most about every 9 minutes, and less often the less you open the app.
  • Google Tasks are the exception. A task you change in NextUp shows at once. A task changed elsewhere, such as in Gmail or on another device, waits for the next redraw or for a tap on the widget's refresh icon.

If Smart and the short intervals are greyed with Pro, your phone has switched off NextUp's permission for exact alarms. A card, Allow exact alarms, appears under the groups: tap it and allow the permission, and they come back.

Agenda's own settings FREE

The Agenda is a list of days, so its own group, Days, is about days: how many it lists, what happens to the empty ones, and what each day's header says. Its summary reads, as it comes, "7 days · Date headers".

  1. Today and tomorrow are named, with the date beside the name: Today / Tomorrow labels.
  2. A line between days: Day separators.
  3. An empty day is still listed, with the line "No events": Show “No events”. Hide empty days removes the day altogether.
  4. A later day's header is its date, then its weekday: Day header set to Date. It is smaller and quieter than today's unless you turn on Highlight later days.
RowDefaultWhat it does
Days ahead7 daysHow many days the Agenda lists: 1 to 14, then one more step, Month, which is 31 days.
Hide empty daysOffSkips the days with nothing on.
Show “No events”OnWrites "No events" under an empty day. Greyed while Hide empty days is on.
Day headerDateDate writes "24 Aug · Mon" on one line. Day writes the weekday in full, "Monday", with the date beside it.
Long dateOffSpells the date line out: "24 August · Monday". Greyed unless Day header is Date.
Today / Tomorrow labelsOnNames today and tomorrow instead of dating them. Off, they are written like any other day, and still stand out.
Highlight later daysOffGives every later day's header the large, bold style of today's.
Day separatorsOnDraws a line between one day and the next. On the Agenda and the Month.
Scroll arrowsOffAdds up and down arrows beside the list. Turn it on only if your launcher blocks swiping and the list will not scroll with your finger.
Fewer days than selected? An ⓘ row: see the note below.

A very busy calendar can list fewer days than you chose, because Android limits how much a widget can hold. As a rough guide, with 3 or 4 events a day a whole month fits; with 8 or more, about two weeks. Open the calendar to see every day.

A week ahead, quiet days hidden

  1. Open the Agenda's settings and unfold Days.
  2. Leave Days ahead at 7 days.
  3. Turn on Hide empty days. The list now jumps from one busy day to the next.
  4. Under Calendar filters, turn on Hide past events, so this morning's meetings make room as the day goes.

NextUp's settings PRO

NextUp shows what is on now or what comes next, and decides by itself which of its four faces to wear. Those faces are not settings, so its screen is the shortest of the four.

NextUp's Layout card

  • No Days group. NextUp is about today, and tomorrow once today is done. It has no list of days to shape.
  • Five rows in Event details. NextUp always prints its times, so there is no Start time or End time switch. Attendees, notes and the two "current event" marks are not drawn on it, so those rows are left out too.
  • No Hide past events. Leaving a finished event behind is what NextUp does anyway.
  • The rest is as on every widget: Content, Widget actions and Refresh.

A NextUp for meetings only

  1. Unfold Calendars and leave only your work calendar on.
  2. Unfold Google Tasks and switch every account off, until the group reads Off. Your Agenda keeps its tasks: the accounts are switched per widget.
  3. Under Calendar filters, turn on Hide all-day events, so a birthday or a day off never takes the headline.
  4. Leave Join button on: the pill is there from the moment a meeting is the headline until it ends.

Week's settings PRO

The Week is seven columns, with the picked day's list under them once the widget is tall enough. So it has two groups of its own: Week grid for the columns, and Event list for the list.

The Week grid group

RowDefaultWhat it does
Longer weekday namesOffHeads the columns "MON, TUE, WED" instead of "M, T, W". The group's summary shows the heads as they are drawn.
Jump to day on tapOnOn, a tap on a column picks that day and the list follows; a second tap opens it. Off, every column opens its day at once.

The Event list group

On the Week, the Agenda's Days group is called Event list, and it shapes the picked day's list. It keeps the rows that say how the day's name is written (Day header, Long date, Today / Tomorrow labels, Highlight later days) and Scroll arrows, with the defaults in the Agenda's table.

  • Left out on the Week: Days ahead, Hide empty days and Show “No events”, because the week is the range and the one picked day is always listed; and Day separators, because one day has nothing to be divided from.
  • The arrows beside the dates are not a setting. They are the only way to another week, so they are always there.
  • Size matters more than any switch. At its smallest, 4×3, the Week shows the columns only. The list appears from a little over 4×4. What each size shows.

A week you can read day by day

  1. Resize the Week to 4×5 or taller, so the list shows under the columns.
  2. Unfold Week grid and leave Jump to day on tap on. Turn on Longer weekday names if single letters are too terse.
  3. Unfold Event details and turn Attendee count off: the list is short, so keep each row to its time and place.
  4. On the widget, tap a column to read that day, and tap it again to open it in the calendar.

Month's settings PRO

The Month grid group

RowDefaultWhat it does
Show events asHeatDots: up to 3 dots a day, in the calendars' colours. Heat: the day tinted by how busy it is. Titles: the events' titles in the cells, and no list under the grid.
Heat byEventsWhat heat measures: the number of things on the day, or the hours they book. Greyed unless the style is Heat.
Count all-day eventsOffCounts an all-day event as 8 hours. Greyed unless Heat by is Hours, and while Hide all-day events is on.
Month switcherOnArrows either side of the month's name, to step a month on the widget.
Longer weekday namesOff"MON" instead of "M" over the columns.
Jump to day on tapOnOn, the first tap on a day restarts the list at that day and a second tap opens it. Off, every tap opens the day. Greyed under Titles.

What a heat level means

Heat has six levels, from a faint tint to the full colour. A day with nothing on has no tint at all.

LevelHeat by EventsHeat by Hours
11 event or taskUnder 2 hours
222 to 4 hours
334 to 6 hours
44 or 56 to 8 hours
56 or 78 to 10 hours
68 or more10 hours or more
  • By hours, two events that overlap count once for the time they share.
  • Tasks never book hours. An all-day event books 8 only with Count all-day events.
  • With Hide past events on, today's cell drops what has ended, so today cools as the day goes by.

The Event list group

On the Month, the Agenda's Days group is called Event list: it shapes the list under the grid. It has the Agenda's header rows (Day header, Long date, Today / Tomorrow labels, Highlight later days), Day separators and Scroll arrows, and one row of its own:

RowDefaultWhat it does
NextUp for todayOnOn today, the list under the grid gives its place to NextUp's card: what is on now or next, the rest of today, then tomorrow. It needs a tall Month, about 4×5. Pick another day in the grid and the plain list is back.

The Month has no Days ahead, Hide empty days or Show “No events”: the grid is its range, and the list skips the days with nothing on, because the grid already shows them.

Titles switches the list off, and a lot with it. With no list to shape, the summaries of Event list and Event details read Not shown with Titles and their rows are greyed, along with Jump to day on tap and Hide past events. Go back to Dots or Heat and they return as you left them.

What the size decides

The Month's size, not a setting, decides whether the list shows, where it sits and whether NextUp's card fits: see What each size shows. Under Titles a small Month pages through its weeks: see the Month widget.

A heat map of my workload

  1. Calendars: leave only your work calendar on.
  2. Month grid: set Show events as to Heat and Heat by to Hours.
  3. Turn on Count all-day events if a conference day should count as a full day.

The darkest days are the ones with the most hours booked, not the most entries.

A wall calendar

  1. Month grid: set Show events as to Titles.
  2. Make the widget as large as your home screen allows. The whole month fits from about 4×6; smaller, it pages through the weeks.
  3. Turn on Longer weekday names if you like.

A tap on a day opens it in the calendar.

A month that works as an agenda

  1. Month grid: keep Dots or Heat, and Jump to day on tap on.
  2. Resize the Month to about 4×5 or taller.
  3. Event list: keep NextUp for today on.

Today reads like a NextUp widget; tap any other day to list it, and tap it again to open it.

A small month, a tap from the calendar

  1. Keep the Month at 4×3: the grid alone.
  2. Month grid: Heat, so the busy days stand out at that size.
  3. Keep Month switcher on, to step to another month on the widget.

With no list to move, every day opens at the first tap.

Every setting, by widget

Every row of the Settings tab, in the order the app lists them, with its default. A tick means the widget has the row; a dash means the row is left out on that widget.
